'When solving a "panic" you must first ask yourself what you were doing that could possibly frighten an operating system.' - Unknown

Intro

Software has been an integral part of a computer since its creation. The "brainpower" and functionality of a computer can be credited to the software installed in the computer. One major category of software is the Operating System (OS). The OS is responsible for starting-up a computer, controlling input and output data, managing files stored on a computer, and processing programs for the user and computer. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) relies on the OS to multitask, or perform several operations in a given time. The OS is also essential in the start-up process of a computer. The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is a set of instructions, or software, which enables the operating system to load into the memory, and make the computer functional for the user. Therefore, unless the OS is loaded onto the computer memory, the system is just a collection of hardware and useless to a user. Consequently, it can be concluded that software is the "driving force" of a computer; without the software, any piece of hardware is futile.
