[Otclassof1973] let me explain ...

Morey,
A bit of the old Mondegreen, innit? Mondegreen's are mishearings, more typically found in poems and musical lyrics (think of such classics as Creedance Clearwater Revival's "There's a bad moon on the right," being misheard as, "There's a bathroom on the right." Or the Jimi Hendrix line, "Excuse me, while I kiss the sky," misheard as, "Excuse me, while I kiss this guy.") Mondegreens take their name from American writer Sylvia Wright whose mother would recite the 17th century ballad, "The Bonnie Earl O'Murry," to her as a child. She later said she always misheard the final line as:
"Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands,
Oh, where hae ye been?
They hae slain the Earl Amurray,
And Lady Mondegreen."
Turns out the final line was actually, "And laid him on the green." As an adult Sylvia wrote an essay about it and coined the term Mondegreen.
Therefore, I'm probably not the only person to miss-sing a lyric or two - especially when emailing on the fly at god knows what hour of the night.
But I digress. Morey, are you telling me you're living in the Bay Area and this is the first I'm hearing (or mishearing) about it? Shall we meet for drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) somewhere in the neighborhood of the Beach Chalet? Better yet, you pick the place and we'll discuss a day and time that works for the both of us. We'll talk - perhaps off the Class grid. Do feel free to drop me a line at neufsaid at juno.com whenever is convenient. I'll give you a topic: They can't seriously be raising the Golden Gate Bridge toll to $7! Discuss.
Seriously, you're actually within the sound of my zip code?
Coolness!
Forgive me now, for a timely segue - over to what Mindy was talking about. It certainly is time for all of us to have a few tests. Yes, it's scary to consider and some of the tests are borderline uncomfortable, but as Mindy points out, catching things in the earliest stages can make all the difference. I'm turning umpty three in a week and a half (May the 20th - umpty is a technical terms) and now that we're all "of an age" let me be the first to say I had a few basic tests three years ago and plan on taking them again in about two years (the doc said every 5 years should do it). Yes, I'm talking about the kinds of tests that end with icky sounding probe words like "oscopy" (brrrr!). It's time to take a proactive approach to our collective continued good health. I want to hear you're all soaking in it, and I want to hear it now!
And that, fellow Spartans, is what is known in the biz as two birds, one stone.
Morey, I promise to turn the radar off (or at least down to stun). Besides, you had me at "Victor Dimestria."
40th reunion?! OMG!
Marvin
PS/ But I can't marry Liat!! Alright, don't make me start singing the wrong lyrics to "Younger Than Springtime," you wouldn't like me when I sing the wrong lyrics.
PPS/ Morey, was that Bloody Mary line a reference to you and Stephanie Spector? Oy, I'm kvelling!
PPSS/ Quick, somebody knock me over with a feather - oh, and call your various doctors to make those appointments. We're all on the honor system here. Do it for yourselves. Do it because Eddie probably didn't until it was too late.

I don't doubt that you have been high as a kite on the fourth of July --
I know I have -- but I believe that Ms. Forbush was only copping to
being high as the *flag* on the fourth of July.

"... there is nothing you can name/that is anything like a dame"
The frame -- soft and wavy, IIRC -- was later in the song, and was "like
the silhouette of a dame;" and, much more interesting to me, was sung by
Victor Dimestria, of blessed memory, who had his soft and wavy moments.
But let me tell you my own little thing about South Pacific. A couple
of years ago, there was a wedding in my synagogue community in which the
kalla's name was Liat. Numerous congregants were confused by my
frequent, impromptu, declarations that "I can't marry Liat!"
(Just a moment here to apologize to '73ers who don't know what in god's
holy name I'm blathering about; I'll admit, it's rude for me to take up
your bandwidth, considering that Marvin and I are probably about two
miles apart in the real, physical world.)
The Creation solo was in fact a soprano. And Bloody Mary is not only
the girl I love, but she's a pretty good friend of my mother these days.

Morey,
I'll try to keep my notorious and maligned radar on it's lowest setting
(oh, it burns! it burns!) Alas, I didn't know Eddie, but the passing of
any one of us diminishes and saddens us all. That's true whether you're
radar challenged or hyper radar sensitive. (If you cut us, do we not
bleed. . . ? Just sayin'.)
As Mary already pointed out, Patti Imbriglio (Class of 72) played Nellie
Forbush (I'm as corny as Kansas in August, high as a kite on the fourth
of July) in the OTHS 1972 production of South Pacific. Andy McDonough
(Class of 73) played opposite her as the Frenchman, Emile de Beque (Some
enchanted evening, you may see a stranger. You may see a stranger
across a crowded room). The incomparable Maurice Taylor (Class of 72)
played Luther Billis (There is nothing like a Dame, nothing in the
world, has the soft and gentle frame that is anything like a dame). I
could go on, it's a radar thing.
As for who sang the first solo in The Creation, tell Diana Terry I'm at
a loss as to what voice (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) sang the first
solo, but since God created light at the end of the first day, I'll go
out on a less than intelligently designed limb and say it was a Soprano
solo, which probably meant either Beverly Jones (Class of 73) or Kathy
Salvano (Class of 74). That is, if it was a Soprano. If it was a Bass
solo, it might have been Andy McDonough (Class of see above). For those
who aren't familiar with The Creation, it was a beautiful piece, written
in the mid 20th century, a refreshing change in the 70's after singing
so many pieces top heavy with liturgical music by Mozart, Haydn and Bach
(but don't get me wrong, the long hairs were beautiful, too - maybe not
Elvis beautiful). Anyway, when we sang The Creation I remember that it
was actually quite exciting to sing something written by someone even
younger than George Gershwin (Class of 1916).
OK, I've said my piece, if anyone wants me I'll be flying under the
radar. You're all invited to visit on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Marvin
PS/ Shout out to Mindy, hope you're feeling better, M.

The most essential gift for a good writer is
a built-in, shock-proof,shit detector.
This is the writer's radar and all
great writers have had it.
Ernest Hemingway
I get a different email list from my own class (1975), and that's where
I thought I was when I posted my last thing, so some small explanation
may be necessary: "Gary D." is Gary Dunkel, Esq., who lives in Florida,
and was just posting something about a Springsteen show he went to down
there, with his brother Rich and Eric Lieberman (OT-74).
Meanwhile, here's something Diana Terry brought up over at '75: who
played Nellie Forbush when we did South Pacific in 1972? And who sang
the first solo in "The Creation?"
(Hi, Tim et al. -- I've been lurking for a while, leery of getting on
Marvin's radar <g>)
