As a brand new resident of Messier 52 [Feb 14], I vote for Messier 52. It's a stellar theme. What could be more apropos than "Salt and Pepper"?

"Just who do you think you are? A superstar? Well, alright, you are."

While many of us are still comfortably ensconced in a place I like to
call Area 51, the spectral shadows of our collective 52nd birthdays
are even now calling the tower for landing instructions. Perhaps some
among us have already boarded that flight. If so, happy birthday,
keep your elbows and hands inside the cabin and please keep an eye on
your own baggage or the terrorists win.

Since my own birthday isn’t until May, I’m left with a little wiggle
room to consider transitioning from Area 51 to a new theme based on
52. Here are a few options for your viewing pleasure:

52 Pickup – It’s catchy (I’m all about the catchy) and probably one of
the first things you’d think of when it comes to the number 52. The
only problem is that it doesn’t grab me. I’ll be glad to demonstrate
on a doll exactly where I wish to be grabbed… but I digress.

52 Weeks - This one just screams L-A-M-E!!! True, it’s the number of
weeks we’ll all be spending in 52 land, but all things being equal
I’ll take a pass. Did I already mention this one screams lame?

Well, Clarice, have the lames stopped screaming? (Sorry, I couldn’t
resist a Silence of the Lambs reference – won’t happen again.)

Isaiah 52 – I know what you're thinking – why wasn’t a biblical
reference up there at the top of the list? This passage actually
includes the lines:

"Awake, awake! Put on your strength, O Zion;
Put on your glorious garments, O Jerusalem, holy city.
No longer shall the uncircumcised or the unclean enter you."

I could be wrong, but the whole circumcision business takes this one
out of the running, but that's just me.

Messier 52 – OK, this one’s an astronomical reference. Messier 52 is
an open star cluster in the Cassiopeia constellation discovered by
Charles Messier in 1774 (duh, everybody knows THAT!). Messier 52, or
M52, has the more common appellation of "Salt & Pepper" due to the
high concentration of bright stars against the black void of space,
making it look like someone spilled the two condiments together
(cleanup in aisle 4). Is it me or is this too esoteric?

B-52 – I’m actually leaning toward this one. It has that whole Be
Here Now, vibe and invites thoughts of Rock Lobster or Love Shack as
this year's musical theme song. Some of you may have been thinking
along the lines of Private Idaho – sadly that’s just wrong on so many
levels. As I see it, the only drawback is fitting in the whole Flying
Fortress angle; but this one may be a real keeper. After all, I B52,
what UB?

Of course, if this year is B52, that lends itself for next year being
I53. Unfortunately the whole BINGO reference derails when we get to
N54 & G55 just barely getting back on track for O56. As always, your
own mileage may vary.

Feel free to try these on and walk around the showroom. Do be
careful, as most are still a bit wet. In the meantime, if you come up
with suggestions of your own you can reach me here in Area 51 (until
May, anyway).

Area 51’s song? They’re playing it now. It’s the theme from The
Twilight Zone, of course.

Last week the candle factory burned down.
Everyone just stood around and sang Happy Birthday.
